Default Save Sibelius!!

Avid - the owners of Sibelius, the music notation application - are closing down its development team, putting the product in jeopardy.

If you love using Sibelius, please visit http://www.facebook.com/SaveSibelius to find out more.

Is this really true, though?

I've read that Avid have denied they are shutting down development of Sibelius.

I'm a Finale user, so the topic doesn't directly affect me

Unfortunately it is true - please visit the Facebook page to find out more.

Avid are closing the London office - and moving all development off shore to a completely new team.

I had used Sibelius earlier.
But now I use music notation software by MagicScore, because it is more available (cost of programm for example) and comfortable.

The problem with this "composing" software is it isn't much use for composing unless you've preset a lot of conditions at the outset. It's great for publication, extracting parts and that, once the thing is composed.

None of these software outfits give anything like a useful technical spec. A friend uses (or used, now) sibelius; some others use finale but for composing they're far too slow and useless. I start without using barlines, put them in later. A finale user said fine, set up a time sig of say 100/4, blank it out then you can go as you like. But it doesn't work. It puts masses of rests in...

There are so many things finale and sibelius can't do so I'd need to know before splashing out £60 or so. I'm not particularly tight but I can buy a lot of m/s paper with that money. I asked a couple of folk one on each to transcribe a few bars from Ravel's Scarbo. It couldn't be done.

Ah well....

You asked the wrong folk, then.

No one but yourself called it a "composing" software, either. And both your questions aren't even pertinent to the issue at hand.

I get sick and bloody tired of needing to be a bloody self-defence expert on this forum. I checked the site link posted by nikitema and look at what it said:

Quote:
With Maestro Composer or Maestro Notation you will find it easy to create great looking and sounding music regardless of your level of proficiency. Our programs provide you with the features and flexibility that professional musicians and publishers demand, yet are still easy to use for beginning musicians as well. Maestro Composer and Maestro Notation allow you to quickly write complex musical compositions while also making it easy to import, edit, print, and export those scores to many different formats.
Ok? Satisfied? Get your brain in the same gear as your typing fingers.

All I wanted to do was chat about music. Looks like a music forum is the last place you can do that.

I agree with that. The best way to jot down ideas when writing music is I find simply to write letters - A C F etc - in a notebook. And not even to try to write dots stems and staffs.

For people such as Mozart even that system is unnecessary, since he could compose entire symphonies in his head. In fact a good many gifted people can do that.

By the way, the entire 28 Gb of Sibs 7 has recently appeared on usenet I see.
