A nice Twitter friend has suggested it's the fugue in d# minor from book one of the Well-Tempered Klavier:

Any joy?

Yeah it does look like the augmented theme that comes in at the end almost exactly.

And boy oh boy, do I love me some stretto. My counterpoint final project used it A LOT. I will spare you that piece of.... work.

Anyone else bothered that the analysis calls the cadence V-i when it is supposed to be V - I (Picardy third)

goodness, now we've got twitter on the case! huge thanks, everyone for your efforts!

i do see the resemblance to BWV 853 (fugue 8 in book 1), but not the "exactly" part... there seem to be some essential differences. of course human memory in general isn't super reliable, but i'm pretty confident about this exact notation (though not the key).

i also should have specified the tempo in my recollection (doh). i just used the longer-note notation out of convention since i'm assuming it's a renaissance piece: the half note here would be about 72, so it goes by pretty quickly. also, i'm pretty sure that this particular passage had harmony moving in rhythmic unison beneath it (probably a third below, mostly).

grrrr... i need to just load my entire renaissance/other a cappella collection onto my ipod and listen nonstop until i find it. i'm sure the worm is in there somewhere!

The differences to me seem to be temporal, more than notewise - in the highlighted sample, only one interval is different, and by one step. The biggest difference I can see is that your melody goes on longer than it does in the fugue.
