Let's just drop this whole thing and move on okay?

Default Nils Gade

I have just ordered Gade's complete symphonies CD set. I heard extracts and I liked them, but I only really know his Fantasy Pieces for clarinet (which I played a couple of years ago and thinking of play again as part of recital for a professional diploma exam hopefully). Solid, late romantic music but unusually fresh despite obvious influences.

I think Gade (Danish) is one of a group of Scandinavian composers which is coming back into the recording repertoire, and along with Stenhammar and revival of Nielsen seems to be coming back into "fashion" on the concert circuit too I hope.

So .. look out for Gade

I have heard both those sets of Adams works, and I really like them, especially the Dharma work and the others on that CD ("My father knew Charles Ives?"...) . Indeed I pretty much like anything that Adams' has written (that I've heard) in the orchestral, concerto and chamber repertoire. I also some vocal/opera like Nixon in China, and have bought Dr Atomic (on DVD) but not got round to watching it yet. I'll write a review when I have the time to get round to that!

I'm pretty picky with John Adams. I think, on one hand, he composed some very fine music, especially in his early days, but, on the other hand, some of his middle-to-late period music has seemed rather trite. I think "Dharma" and "My Father Knew Charles Ives" are, from what Adams fans have told me, two of his better later works. The electric violin just isn't heard in classical music everyday.

I have a complete symphony box set on BIS with Jarvi that I haven't even got around to hearing yet. I'm sure this is the set you're referring to.

A Nielsen revival you say? I hope so. Nielsen was one of the first composers I got into. His "Symphony No. 2" is just so beautiful. It's my favorite symphony by Nielsen.

That Tavener Requiem has yet to grow on me... no where near as much as these two discs:

I especially like the Hyperion disc and the closing hypnotic chant, Shunya.

Among the recent purchases:

The Krips Don Giovanni is especially marvelous... in spite of dating from 1955. The sound is unexpectedly good... and the performance spectacular.
