Anyone who tries to silence socialists one one hand while bleating about free speech on the other is a hypocrite. That's not aimed at you, marquis. I don't want my mum telling me off again.

But the level of monothought and propaganda in the US is terrifying. Most people think if you're a socialist, you ought to be locked up in case you do something bad to their kids. And yet the US right claims it advocates political free thinking. It doesn't advocate free thinking any more than Stalin did.

Fortunately, I think the Murdochs do themselves a lot of damage when they claim their properties, like the vile Fox News, are independent. It is so patently a lie that it has a catastrophic effect on the credibility of every claim they make.

Herze, what you have to remember is that in American culture, the Communist/Socialist model has been demonized completely almost since its inception. He may not be a red streaked, socialist to the core Socialist - why you seem to want to make that such an exclusive club, I don't know - BUT he is far more socialist than the a lot of agrarian, Mid-West Americans can tolerate. We are not talking about the 75% of the country that lives within 100 miles of the coast line, we are talking about the other 25%. They are vocal, they are rabid, and for the most part completely non-sensical. BUT they are most importantly vocal, like they were and continue to be against Chompsky, et al. I was stopped in a convenience store the other day by the teller asking me if I voted for Obama, (I didn't, I voted independant) because obviously I was misguided because he wants to even allow the American Communist Party into the political area. The Red Scare in this country did not die out with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Flo, I don't want to silence Socialists. Quite the opposite - because I don't agree entirely with a fully social solution, the only way to find out what I like and don't like is to hear the opposing view points. Go ahead, talk all you want. I think that political divides should be decided by the public, that is where they were designed to be hashed out. But just like the mantle of oppression and censorship comes with conservatism (hence why I disagree some much with them), so does that of abuse in the social regime. That isn't to say that all Socialists are abusive of power, just that those who came before were.

I have to run to a meeting, but I have more thoughts on this. Damned work, don't they know it is Friday!

No, you're great. But if free speech is subjected to market forces then only the opinions of very rich and very conservative people get disseminated in the media (which they own), while dissent is repressed. Market forces don't encourage free speech.
