I've just bought my second version of Verdi's Requiem - conducted by Claudio Abbado - it is a live performance and apparently Abbado's last. One reviewer attended the concert and said Abbado was obviously ill and very thin, but the perfoance was full of passion and many in the audience, including the reviewer, came to realise that the requiem would in fact be Abbado's own. The perfomance made such an impact that it was followed by a very long silence before massive applause..the silence is captured on the CD.

When did he die and what did he die of? It's a sign of my age that I remember him as being (seemingly) of the younger generation of conductors!! - but I don't get out much!).

The other version I have is Solti, with Pavarotti........what a glorious voice!

It's a thread that is 'stuck' to the top of the forum, so that it never slips off the front page. They're very useful.

About a hundred. And once one of them is bought, another one will conveniently take its place.

Fortunately Abbado is more than alive, though he doesn't conduct on regular basis anymore. Dolce vita on Sardinia, interrupted by a lot of engagements with Youth Orchestras (Venezuela, Cuba, Gustav Mahler Orchestra etc.) and Luzern.

As personality and conductor he's certainly one of my favorites, such a creative freethinker. His decision to get out of the concert mill on his career pinnacle to live unburdenedly and to invest his time and name for the youth is typical for him.

I love the Requiem recording as well, full of tension and spirit.
