Other composers that inspire my own writing? That's a tough call because like so many people I have a wide range of influences from jazz, rock, bluegrass, flamenco, and classical. I think in terms of classical Ravel, Bruckner, Delius, Bartok, Stravinsky, Sibelius, and more recently Vivaldi, Corelli, Rameau, and Scarlatti.

I have had no formal training as a composer other than learning how to read music when I was in school, so composition is something that's very personal to me and I guess you could say I'm working with my own harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic language. In terms of non-musical influences, I find a lot of solice in nature, but also the moments of magic that can occur from citylife.

I haven't composed that much. It takes me a long time to complete a piece because I suppose I'm a bit of a perfectionist and also that I have really only been composing for a short time (about 4-6 yrs), so my confidence in my work comes and goes. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to complete my first concerto, which is written for three different instruments: alto flute, oboe, and tenor saxophone.

Default Instrument Choices

Hello Mirror, I'm interested in why you have chosen to combine the sounds of those three instruments. I realised that it's really like asking why people play their chosen instrument, but perhaps you know players for whom you are writing the piece? The three instruments have a thick and sometimes rather similar texture. I'd love to know what else you have you written so far?
